Team
We aim to foster a safe and inclusive environment that promotes creativity, collaboration, and intellectual growth. Our philosophy is to mentor, empower, and champion individuals from all walks of life who are passionate about, and dedicated to, conducting scientific research with integrity and rigor. To uncover basic truths of human neurobiology we must work together, honestly, and hold each other to the highest standards.
Principal Investigator
Gabriella L. Boulting, PhD
Dr. Boulting earned her PhD in Biochemistry at Harvard University, in the laboratory of Kevin Eggan, PhD, Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology. Her research focused on applications of human stem cells to the study of neurodegenerative diseases, such as the production of human spinal motor neurons, generation of human iPSC lines for in vitro models of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and elucidation of disease phenotypes in motor neurons derived from ALS patient-iPSCs.
She completed postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Michael Greenberg, PhD, Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Boulting, with colleagues, discovered primate-evolved expression and functions of the secreted peptide Osteocrin in the brain. Subsequently, using single-cell and quantitative genomic profiling, Dr. Boulting led the first epigenomic study of neuronal activity-dependent changes in human neurons, leading to the discovery of ASD heritability enrichment unique to activity-inducible gene promoters.
Some of Gabriella’s favorite things outside of research are SciFi, wine, pão de queijo (with guava), and the beach.
Lab Members
Shannon Prouty
Research Assistant
My name is Shannon Prouty, and I am currently working toward obtaining my M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Northeastern University. I earned my B.S. in Biology from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
In my free time I enjoy watching anime, playing games, playing sports/working out, and playing with my two puppies. My new favorite anime is Fruits Basket, I love playing video games, Dungeons and Dragons, and Magic the Gathering, and for sports I play soccer, lacrosse, and I participate on a competitive bowling team in the summer.
Shayla Newman-Toledo
Graduate Student, Neurobiology
Hello! My name is Shayla. I received my B.S. in biology from UMass Boston, and I am currently a graduate student in the Neuroscience program at UMass Chan Medical School within the lab of Dr. Gabriella Boulting. My scientific interests are neurobiology and metabolomics.
Some interesting facts about me include: 1) I love anime, 2) I love volleyball, and 3) I really want a tattoo of a brain soon.
